Drew = 2 Years + 2 Months

Yesterday my little Drew-bug turned 26 months old! I realized that I hadn't been writing about what he's been up to so here are a few random thoughts... (side note: I started this post last week and just realized that it grew into quite a novel!)

Dear Drew ~ Your typical day when you are home goes something like this:

  • Get up around 8:30am and eat breakfast shortly thereafter (give or take 30 minutes)
  • Lunch at 12:30
  • Nap from 1:30 - 3:30 (sometimes you get up earlier, sometimes later)
  • Snack
  • Dinner at 6:30
  • Bath at 7:15
  • Snack at 8:00
  • Read books
  • Bedtime at 8:30

That's right, you typically sleep a full twelve hours at night! You have been a great sleeper since the beginning and I continue to *believe* wholeheartedly that you inherited my side of the family's sleep gene!

You still eat in your highchair, which is more like a booster seat with a tray. Keeps me from having to chase you allover the place! And we always try to eat dinner together at the kitchen snack bar. You are really good at drinking out of an open top cup, so that is usually what we give you when you are in your highchair. Of course sometimes you like to see what happens when you tip the cup a little too far over... You're also really good with a spoon and fork and are using your left hand (like your momma!) most of the time.

Some of your favorite foods are: waffles, Cini-mini's from Burger King (thanks to Grandma), oatmeal, grilled cheese, fish sticks, chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, spaghetti, carrots, corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, bananas, grapes, and apples. Most of it is typical toddler food! You go back and forth on whether or not you like green beans, peas, broccoli w/cheese, and eggs but I keep giving them to you pretty often anyway! You still choke at times, but it has gotten so much better. I use to dread meal time because I knew that you would almost always end up choking, getting mad, and then not eating anymore. I'm glad that phase has (almost) passed!

You are still seeing Jaci for speech two times per week. It is coming along slowly and I have probably self-diagnosed you with every speech disorder there is! But everyone assures me that your speech will pick up soon -- we just have to keep working on it. Right now, most everything you say (or try to say) is in a CV (constant vowel) combination so we are working really hard on getting you into the habit of using CVC (i.e. mom) or CVCV (i.e. momma) sounds. The speech therapist at St. Louis wants us to continue working on p, b, and m sounds and on getting you to use your lips more. We have become pretty creative on turning any object into something that begins with one of those sounds -- i.e. dog is pup or puppy, rabbit is bunny, etc.

Your favorite things to play with are your little animal figurines. You have a set of farm animals and a set of wildlife/zoo animals. They are the first thing you go for every morning. And you always like to have them in pairs. So you'll find the two cows, or the two elephants and play with them. It's always funny to watch you make them dance and give them bites and drinks of pretend food from your kitchen!

You also love anything you can ride on; especially 4-wheelers and lawn mowers. Colby and Whitney both have 4-wheelers and you like to ride the red one, then the yellow one, then the red one again...well, you get the point! You still haven't figured out the tractor we got you for your birthday, but I'm sure that by next summer, you'll be all over the neighborhood!

Where do you spend your time at these days? Well, the weekends you are at home with me and your dad and then I don't work on Monday's so we spend the day together. On Tuesday, you go to daycare. On Wednesday, you spend the day with Nan and Aunt Barrie. Then you are with grandma (and grandpa, Colby, Whitney, Mama Mary Kay, Mama Lorene...) from Thursday mornings until Friday night.

You know almost all of your colors. Even though you can't "say" the color, you can definitely identify them. Your receptive language overall is great! When Jaci last evaluated you, your reception language scores were above average!

When you are at home, we try to keep the TV off. When you do watch TV, I would say that your favorite show is Wonder Pets. You still get a kick out of the Baby McDonald Baby Einstein video too. You also love watching Barney at Grandma's house! (Daddy won't allow it at our house - ha!)

One of my favorite things is getting hugs from you. If daddy gets you up in the morning, then when I come in there, you run straight for me and give me a big hug! When I say "give me a kiss," you turn your check toward me so I can kiss it!

We haven't started potty training yet because you are still at the point where you don't really care if you have a wet or dirty diaper on. You will sit on the potty, though, so we usually do that before bath time. I forgot to mention that when we were in St. Louis last month, you were running around the hotel room with no diaper on because we had just gotten back from swimming and all of a sudden you #2'd in the floor. (Hope that wasn't TMI!) The look on your face was PRICELESS!! You could tell that you were thinking..."What in the world is that?" -- ha! Although I do think it made you make a connection because the next couple of days you would point to your diaper whenever it was dirty. Maybe I need to let you run around without a diaper more often!!

Last of all, I love your bedtime routine. We sit in the same rocking chair every night with the same pillow and same blanket. We read exactly 4 books, then you go over to the couch to give daddy a hug and then you run back over to me. When I pick you up, you put your head down on my shoulder while I say your prayer and sing you a little song. Then I lay you down and cover you up and you are asleep in no time. (The Ferber method, while tough, was the best thing we ever did!)

Well, this turned out really long, but now that I've written about everything you've been up to, I can know focus on just writing about the new stuff each month!

We love you Drew!

A Look Back to 2 Years Ago

Since I didn't start my blog until Drew was almost one, I like to go back and document some of the big events that happened during his first year. And one of those big events happened exactly two years ago today. It wasn't an exciting or fun milestone, though. It was the date of Drew's first surgery. This is what I wrote on my MySpace blog...

Drew's first surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday (Aug. 22nd) at St. Louis Children's Hospital. This surgery is called a "lip adhesion." A lip adhesion basically involves sewing the edges of the cleft together, and then going back about 6 months later to perform the actual repair. The lip adhesion has the benefit of reducing the tension on the final repair, and potentially making the scar narrower. It will also push his gum ridges together.

I have such mixed emotions about his surgery. One part of me doesn't know how I am going to hand over my perfectly healthy little boy to a team of doctors and nurses for a 3 hour surgery. That part of me is also so scared for him to have to go through surgery at such a young age and for him to have to be in pain. Then there is my "fear" of seeing him for the first time... The other part of me (the rational side I guess you would call it) knows that this has to be done and that it's for his own good, but it's still hard.

So please say a little prayer for Drew and for the doctors that will be operating on him. I know in my heart that God will watch over him and that everything will be fine!
~Krissy

We went to St. Louis the night before and my mom came with us. I remember being in the hotel room and getting some last minute pics of Drew and his "first face."

This one totally cracks me up! On MySpace I named it, "They're going to do what to me tomorrow????" You've gotta find humor in moments like these!

Love this pic of the two of us!

The day after surgery and back at home!

One week later...

And a cute one from 12 days later -- finally no more blood!

It is probably true when people say that these surgeries are harder on the parents because the kids are so little that they won't remember them, but that sure doesn't make it any easier. I'm just so proud of Drew for so many things -- one of those being what he has had to go through in his short little life and how well he has handled everything. And while I know that he still has more obstacles to face, I believe that he will come through them all with flying colors!

I blogged about his second lip surgery here and his palate surgery here (and I hope there are no more surgeries to blog about for a while!!)

Play Date with Noah!

Dear Drew ~ We had such a fun day on Monday! We drove about an hour and a half and met up with a girl I use to work with (Jill) and her adorable little boy Noah (he is just a little over a month older than you). Jill and I had been talking about trying to get together forever (I hadn't seen her since Dec. 2006) and I'm so glad that we finally did!

The first place we went was Pump It Up. It is big indoor play area that is full of blow-up bouncy toys. From 9:30-11:00 on Mondays, they have "pop-in playtime" so we opted for that instead of the hot zoo. Other than a bit of drama when we first got there, you two had a blast, although I think you'll like it even more when you are a bit older.

As for what happened when we first got there...they had a HUGE blow up slide and since Jill is pregnant (due in November!) I thought it would be a good idea to take both of you up it. Big mistake!! We got about half way up and you both started having melt downs. Unfortunately, by that time, there were quite a lot of others behind us, so we started trying to get back down and I ended up slipping. So now you were both crying and I felt like a horrible mother! But to my defense, it was a very big, steep slide! Fortunately, the tears didn't last long and you were two were able to enjoy the rest of the morning.

Here's some of the fun I captured:

Then we headed to Chuck E. Cheese for lunch. We had a great time there too. We hit the road around 1:00 and by 1:05 you were out. You slept the whole way home and then I was even able to get you to go back to sleep when we got home. I ended up having to wake you up at 4:00! I guess the day really wore you out!

Thanks for playing with us Jill and Noah -- hope to see you both again soon!

Park and Colten's House

Dear Drew ~ Saturday morning, you and I headed to the park. I keep trying to do stuff outside with you (even though it's been hot lately) because all too soon, it will be freezing out and we'll have no choice but to stay in. So our "adventure" today was to the park. You really loved the swings today, so you swung...

and swung...

and swung...

while I snapped lots of cute pics!

After the park, we went to DQ and you had a vanilla milkshake. I might have had a bit of it too...

After dinner, we went to Colten's house! You two played together better this time. You got so dirty that you ended up getting your bath at his house before heading home. Here you two are -- all fresh and clean after baths! (Not the best of pics, but it's hard to get a good pic of two two-year olds!)

Weekend With Whitney

I love when my little sister stays with us. She is 14 and will be a FRESHMAN this year! Drew loves playing with her, Jon loves tormenting her, and I, well, just love having her around!!

In addition, to making video montages, we had a full, fun weekend. Saturday, while Jon was working, we headed to the library to load up on some new books for Drew. Have I mentioned how much Drew loves to be read to? We always read to him before his nap and before bed and I think he would sit in the rocking chair with me all day and listen to books if I let him. I can't wait until we can read "chapter" books to him!

That night, we went bowling!

Sunday we went to church -- didn't Drew look cute??

After nap time, it was time for some water play.

Thanks for staying with us aunt Whitney :o)

Work In Process

What have I been up to this weekend? Well, my sister Whitney stayed with us and she helped me put together the below video of Drew! It's something I've always wanted to do, but now I realize just how long of a process it can be...especially since I'm kind of picky! But after a late night and some technical issues with Windows Movie Maker, I present to you...Drew's first month (yeah, we only made it through one month). Enjoy!! (And THANK YOU Whitney sooooo much!!!)

Weekend in St. Louis -- Team Visit & Zoo!

Dear Drew ~ Friday was your team visit with the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Institute at St. Louis Children's Hospital. You had your first team visit last May. This year's visit was called a "mini team" because we didn't have to see as many people. This meant that we didn't have to be there as early, so instead of going up the night before, we headed to St. Louis early Friday morning -- me, you and Daddy.

Your appointment was at 11:00 am and we were signing in at right about 10:58--nothing like cutting it close! We hung out in the waiting area for a bit and I couldn't help but check out the other kids since I never see other cleft-affected kids in real life. I always thought it would be a great idea if after the appointments they had a reception of some sorts so all the parents and kids could get together and chat. Maybe I should suggest that to them...

The first person we saw was an ENT resident. She examined you ears, nose, and throat of course! She said the right ear was full of wax so she couldn't tell if the tube was still in or not (You had your first set of ear tubes at just 8 weeks old and a second set put in right after you turned one). The tube was still in the left ear though. We told her about the issues with your throat and when she looked at it, she said your tonsils were red. Also, she said that they weren't really big, but they weren't small either and that we would discuss it more later. Right then she wanted to take us up to the ENT area to get your ear cleaned out. We've been through that before so I wasn't looking forward it...

Up into the dentist-like chair you went with me holding your legs, Daddy holding your arms, and a nurse holding your head while the ENT resident looked into your ear with a microscope and used a sharp metal pick to try to get the wax out. You were pretty calm at first, but that didn't last for long. I kept watching her pull the tool out of your ear with nothing on it time and time again while you got madder and madder. I guess that wax was stuck! Finally she started to make some progress, but by that time you were pretty ticked! She even got the tube out too, which was loose in your ear. She said that when the tube came out, it caused all that wax to collect in your ear. So now your right ear is wax and tube free! She also "recommended" we have your tonsils removed, but after discussing it with the main ENT doc, said that it wasn't a good idea because kids with cleft palates sometimes use that tissue when they speak so removing them can cause further speech problems, which we definitely don't want!

After that bit of drama, we headed in for your hearing test. (Your last hearing test was back in September.) There I was sitting in this little dark, sound proof room with you on my lap and I could see your reflection in the glass in front of us. You would hear the noise and look over to the little black box, which would light up and "reward" you with a moving puppy/oinking pig. Then you would look back over to the technician and flash her a huge smile! The results were that you were in normal range for at least one ear, which means you can hear good enough to develop normal speech. When you get older, they can do more accurate tests to see how each ear performs. Last of all, the audiologist did a test to check your ear pressure. Based on the results of this, she thought your left tube was not working correctly, so back to the waiting room we went to be seen by the ENT doc again.

When a different doctor took a look at it, she said that there was a small piece of wax blocking the tube so she gave us a prescription for some antibiotic ear drops to use for 5 days. We'll go back in 6 months for another hearing test and to see the ENT doc. Hopefully, you'll do fine without your ear tube in the right ear and HOPEFULLY you won't have to get tubes again!

An hour and a half later, and we were back in the waiting room. Next up, speech! I really like your team therapist Mary. We last saw her in November, and she is always good about responding to my emails when I have questions. Based on what we told her about your speech and what she observed, she would like for us to come up for another 2-hour session with her, so hopefully I can get that set up soon.

Last stop of the day -- your plastic surgeon, Dr. Kane. Before he came in, we saw his "fellow" and then in came Dr. Kane with three more people!! He took a look inside your mouth (which we had been practicing!) and thought that your pallet and lip looked great! In his opinion, your next surgery won't be until your bone graft (probably around age 9). Of course things can always change, but we'll hope that you stay "surgery free" until then!! I must admit that I felt a bit awkward in a room with so many doctors so I didn't really ask all of the questions I had planned on asking...I'll just have to be better prepared for next year -- hope he is!!

It was 2:00 and we were finally done, so we had a quick lunch in the hospital cafeteria and then headed to check into a hotel! We thought that we would make the trip to St. Louis into a mini-vacation. Now that the doctor stuff was over, it was time for some fun!

After a short nap in the car, we hung out in the hotel for a bit and watched TV. Then we went to Chuck E. Cheese for dinner. This was your second time there and you were just as fascinated with everything this time as you were last time!

After we made it back to the hotel, we went for a quick dip in the hotel swimming pool. Then Saturday morning, it was off to the zoo! Despite trying to get there early, we didn't make it there until 11...

One of the first things we saw at "The River's Edge" was fish!

Then it was the hippos. One of them was right up by the glass and I tried to get you to stand by it, but I think you were a little freaked out. I can't say I blame you though...look how close it was!

Then we saw a "snake" and while I was taking your picture by it, someone said "give it a kiss," and well, you did!

Your favorite part might have been the elephants (one of your fave animals right now!)...

Then it was time for the Children's zoo and you LOVED the goat exhibit!!

After we left this area, it started to rain. And not just a little bit! Luckily before the down pour really got going, we took shelter in "The Living World" which had a nice cafeteria in it. So we had lunch, bought some ponchos at the gift stand and kept enjoying our day!

You really loved watching the puffins splash. This was the look on your face as you watched them!

Then we rode the carousal, took a train ride, and hit the road.

It was a busy but fun trip!
